St Barnabas Choir

We are blessed with an enthusiastic church choir under the guidance of  Music Director Giles Holland and enjoy a variety of hymns and ‘worship songs’ from a range of traditions - music is an important part of our services and is something that we are very keen to develop.

We enjoy hymns and ‘worship songs’ from a wide variety of traditions, often in the same service.  Every effort to ensure the music is accessible for all; for example, each week there is a specially selected Junior Church hymn with percussion instruments being joyfully played by many of the congregation.  Several anthems, hymns and carols used at services were written by our Musical Director and a member of the choir, and new compositions for special occasions are currently in hand.

Our enthusiastic choir is blessed with Giles Holland, an experienced and energetic Music Director who has toured as a professional keyboard player.  He is also a classically-trained pianist and organist and plays the Last Post on the cornet for Remembrance services both at St Barnabas and at All Saints.  In addition to the regular choir members we are joined by a drummer and guitarist when the style of music calls for it.   We often combine with singers and band members from All Saints for special services.

We are fortunate to have all four ‘voices’ and  always keen to recruit new members.

We meet regularly during the year to plan the music for the different church seasons.  We try to make sure that the musical content enhances the spirituality of the service but at the same time to take into account the fact that not everyone is as familiar with some hymns and songs as regular church goers are, especially at Family and Parade services.

Gathering songs at the start of our services help to set the theme and mood.

We normally sing from the front pews but for special services move to the Sanctuary or choir loft where there is a two manual organ.

Live music also plays an important role in our social life, with special performances by visiting artistes as well as musical contributions at many of our regular events.
